Here's how I've been avoiding sleeping on the streets for the past week:
Weds 6/13 & Thurs 6/14 nights: Victoria's place (NYU dorms in Union Square)
Fri, Sat, & Sun nights: Steve & Jeremy's house in Westchester
Mon & Tues nights: Justine's apartment (upper west side)
Weds night & tonight: Dinah's apartment (Murray Hill)
I guess I'm more of a nomad than a homeless person. I'm also really lucky to have such fantastic friends and family who understand just how terrible and ironic it would be if I ended up an actual homeless person, given my crippling 'homelophobia' (fear of homeless people). -- Credit goes to Chris Washnock for coining that gem of a term.
I behaved yesterday at Lord & Taylor-- resisted a very tempting shoe purchase and, later, an even closer call with a pair of Kate Spade earrings. Having confirmed this crippling weakness, however, my plan for the next 3-5 years (or until I achieve financial security, whichever comes first) is clearly going to need to include avoiding retail establishments. Good thing I've moved to Manhattan, right?
This morning I left when Dinah did (around 9:00 for work) for my usual morning run. Being so close to the East River, I thought it would be nice to run along it. Wrong. I've been taking pictures on my runs (and walks throughout the day), but I'll spare you the one I took this morning (of a sleeping/deceased? homeless man sprawled across the sidewalk). Here's a much more pleasant one I took on Weds morning near Justine's apartment. Reminds me of Paris.
Oh, and I saw my first famous person already last week! Aziz Ansari-- he's a stand-up comedian and sitcom actor (most notably on Parks & Rec.). We made eye-contact. It was definitely equally as meaningful to him as it was to me. I was probably the first fellow South Carolinian he'd seen since lunch. Or something.
